Much Western Maine Rock is on private property, not National or State Park land like Camden or Acadia. Access is not guaranteed. People are fighting to keep established crags open, to open new crags, and to maintain positive relations with landowners. Nationally, the Access Fund is the premier group dedicated to maintaining access for climbers; locally the Maine Climbers Alliance works toward the same goals. Join it!

Recent Access Development: The Mahoosuc Land Trust is working to raise the money to aquire Buck's Ledge. Check them out! Help them!

Things climbers can do to protect access:

  • KEEP A LOW PROFILE
  • PRACTICE LNT PRINCIPLES
  • OBEY SEASONAL CLIFF CLOSURES
  • MINIMIZE THE IMPACT OF FIXED ANCHORS
  • DON'T CHOP BOLTS, CHIP OR GLUE HOLDS
  • DON'T TRESPASS
